Science and the Chytrid Epidemic by Lex Miller

  Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
(Bd), more commonly known as the chytrid fungus is a widespread epidemic amongst amphibians that is pushing many species to extinction. The chytrid fungus causes the disease chytridiomycosis which thickens the skin of those amphibians infected with the disease. How does this kill amphibians? When the skin is thickened it reduces the ability for ion transport across the skin membrane, which in turn leads to cardiac arrest. This disease is ravaging frog populations all over the globe. However, other amphibians such as the salamanders and caecilians are not as heavily affected by the epidemic.

  Chytrid is an aquatic fungus that releases zoospores into water sources. The dumping of infected water into an environment can lead to infection of the amphibians in that ecosystem. A study conducted by leading Zoologist Vredenburg also suggests that the amphibians themselves are natural carriers that spread the fungus from habitat to habitat over land as well. (Vredenburg et al, 2007). Many herpetological societies websites’ have pages dedicated to prevention of anthropogenic-mediated spreading of the disease by educating readers about cleaning equipment used by herpetologists and amphibian enthusiasts.             This year I was finally able to get some time and take my kids to the Sacramento Reptile Expo at the Sacramento Convention Center.  I was ecstatic to be able to take my five children to a show such as this, and my kids were super excited to see and touch all the reptiles.

Woodland RECAP and What Comes Next

I competed in the Woodland Highland Games on April 29th.  I did not have my best showing, and I threw considerably less than I had hoped for, but I got numbers in the books.  The SHA dropped the Lightweight Class mark to under 190, and I wasn't in any condition to cut 15lbs., so I competed in a stacked B class.  Here are the results:

A Walk in the Zoo and Rehabbing the Bad Stuff

First things first...my back is still a bit crappy.  My hips are crooked, and my spine is obviously out of alignment, but the muscle issue is on it's way out!  I will be hitting the treadmill tonight, I might do some light stone throws on Friday and then next week I will re-integrate myself into the workout plan.  On Monday I hit up the San Francisco Zoo and got a good workout walking all around the facility.  Took a TON of pictures...

02-03-12 Heavy Events + Upper Body Workout

I threw the Driveway Stone 16 pounder today.  Had a rough go of it at first.  Considering I probably did over 50 throws the upper body workout was neglected, but I still pushed through.  Here it is:

01-24-12 Upper Body Strength Training + Heavy Events Training

I completed a stone put session prior to my weight training session for today's workout.  It made a bit of a difference in stamina and strength throughout the entire build up.  Here's how it went:

The weather has been horrible for heavy events training so I go a little creative and made an indoor/soft for concrete 16lbs. stone.  This workout got interrupted a bit so I split this one up into two sessions.  The first session was during the day and I completed my squats and then did some stone put progressions.  Later that night I finished the rest of the lower body workout.  Here is the result:
