Science and the Chytrid Epidemic by Lex Miller

  Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
(Bd), more commonly known as the chytrid fungus is a widespread epidemic amongst amphibians that is pushing many species to extinction. The chytrid fungus causes the disease chytridiomycosis which thickens the skin of those amphibians infected with the disease. How does this kill amphibians? When the skin is thickened it reduces the ability for ion transport across the skin membrane, which in turn leads to cardiac arrest. This disease is ravaging frog populations all over the globe. However, other amphibians such as the salamanders and caecilians are not as heavily affected by the epidemic.

Chytrid is an aquatic fungus that releases zoospores into water sources. The dumping of infected water into an environment can lead to infection of the amphibians in that ecosystem. A study conducted by leading Zoologist Vredenburg also suggests that the amphibians themselves are natural carriers that spread the fungus from habitat to habitat over land as well. (Vredenburg et al, 2007). Many herpetological societies websites’ have pages dedicated to prevention of anthropogenic-mediated spreading of the disease by educating readers about cleaning equipment used by herpetologists and amphibian enthusiasts. The Run Down: Sacramento Reptile Show

Event:  Sacramento Reptile Expo
Date:  September 29, 2012
This year I was finally able to get some time and take my kids to the Sacramento Reptile Expo at the Sacramento Convention Center.  I was ecstatic to be able to take my five children to a show such as this, and my kids were super excited to see and touch all the reptiles.

B2C1W4D1: Front Squat and Bench TEST!

Today begins a week of testing the limits of my body and finding out if my body is progressing.  I really get nervous on testing week...almost as if I don't want to let TRAINING LAB down or disappoitn the CAVE OF STRENGTH for not working hard enough.  Well, here are today's results:

B2C1W2D3: Cleans and Snatch

Another glorious workout on Matty V's TRAINING LAB. If you are paying attention then you are wondering why I am on week 2 day 3 of this program and not week 3 day 3.  I am behind a week on the power cleans and single arm snatch.  Here's the workout:

B2C1W3D2: Push JERK and Deads!!! Om my...

I decided to get my schedule together a little better and I think I can consistantly do a Monday, Wednesday, Friday rotation with some throwing on Sundays.  Only time will tell.  Did Push Jerk instead of Push Press today to work on some shoulder speed.  Here's the workout:

B2C1W2D2: Push Press and Deads! plus some Throws Drills

Back in the gym today.  Graveyards are taking their toll on me, but I push on.  I decided to do some research and get back to throwing.  As of right now I am (vicariously) under the tutelage of a World Champion for my TRAINING LAB program, and I am under the influence of Eastern European throwing drills from the old DRS and CCCP.  HA!  I am so's what's really going on:

Future of "World's Strongest Scientist" Blog

Wow.  It's been a really long time since I have had a moment to post a blog update.  I really want to keep this going, but my current work schedule, family commitments, and school deadlines are making it extremely hard to keep a daily blog post.  I am thinking more like a weekly or every few days update will be more fitting.

Woodland RECAP and What Comes Next

I competed in the Woodland Highland Games on April 29th.  I did not have my best showing, and I threw considerably less than I had hoped for, but I got numbers in the books.  The SHA dropped the Lightweight Class mark to under 190, and I wasn't in any condition to cut 15lbs., so I competed in a stacked B class.  Here are the results:

Update: Workouts from this week so far...

I'm slipping a bit on these blog posts.  My back has taken a wrong turn and is not better yet, and it is now affecting certain lifts.  Strange ones at that!  My 3 bulging discs are keeping me from doing lifts that one would believe to be the only safe choices for a man in my situation.  Here is the run down:

04-09-12 INSEASON Strength Week 2 day 1

I was a little frightened when I woke up and realized I was going to be squatting again.  My back has been acting up.  I tried to prolong the inevitable by throwing open stone, but in the end the squats came and wrecked me!  Here is the torture...I mean workout:

03-30-12 INSEASON Speed/Power Wrap Up and Maxes

Finished up a shortened version of the INSEASON Speed/Power block of Matt Vincent's TRAINING LAB.  I maxed out even though it was not called for because I needed to see how my strength is recovering.  Keep in mind I still have THREE BULGING DISCS in my lower back.  Here's the workout:

3-29-12 Update REHAB Maxing Again...

I have decided to forgo the Rehabicles videos since I am starting to feel more like myself.  Big thanks to Matt Vincent's TRAINING LAB which is now in HARD COPY and available for purchase.  Without this program I would be lost right now and probably still in pain.  Here is what I have been up to since the last post:

03-12-12 Squat/Bench/Stone Speed Training W2D1

A new week, a new day, a new scientist?  I feel better than I have in a few weeks.  Not 100%.  More like 68.3%, but better than the ultimate lows I was hitting the past couple weeks.  Here is the workout:

03-09-12 Clean and Snatch W1D3

I went to the doctor and he told me stuff I didn't want to hear.  After training the River Valley High School Cheer Leaders I hit the weights.  Here's how it went:

03-07-12 MRI tomorrow = No training TONIGHT!

Not doing any work tonight at all.  I was planning on doing Pre-Season Speed W1D2, but I think that my MRI would better serve my recovery if my back muscles aren't trashed from dead lifts and over head press.  So I think I will just talk a little bit...

03-05-12 Pre-Season Speed Training

This was the first day of my new training program: TRAINING LAB by Matt Vincent .  The training was light due to my REHAB maxes being very low, but this workout still worked me over pretty good.  And I got some throwing in as well.  Here's how it went:

Rehabicles Ep. 7: Mini Games 03-03-12

In case you're wondering...the crest at the end is my own variation of the Miller crest. Normally three wolves heads are on a shield, but I am a one man Wolf Pack! And the collar translates from Irish and says, "self hatred motivates". The latin motto at the bottom say, "Keep Moving Forward".

Keep Moving Forward,

03-01-12 THE REHAB MAXES ARE IN! Don't get too excited...

Seriously.  These maxes are the worst.  I think I used to lift some of these numbers in 8th grade.  But I will survive.  Here's what I did for the first day of March:

02-22-12 Heavy Events Rehab

First time since the injury that I have thrown anything.  I think I may have found the culprit to my injury....

Monday, February 20, 2012

It's going to be a very long road back.

It has been 15 days since I hurt my lower back.  Most of the pain is gone, but there is still something wrong.  It has also bee 15 days since I did anything as far as training goes.  I worked out tonight and it was...well...see for yourself:

A Walk in the Zoo and Rehabbing the Bad Stuff

First things back is still a bit crappy.  My hips are crooked, and my spine is obviously out of alignment, but the muscle issue is on it's way out!  I will be hitting the treadmill tonight, I might do some light stone throws on Friday and then next week I will re-integrate myself into the workout plan.  On Monday I hit up the San Francisco Zoo and got a good workout walking all around the facility.  Took a TON of pictures...

02-03-12 Heavy Events + Upper Body Workout

I threw the Driveway Stone 16 pounder today.  Had a rough go of it at first.  Considering I probably did over 50 throws the upper body workout was neglected, but I still pushed through.  Here it is:

The Edge 2.0 Interview with 2012 World's Strongest Man Brian Shaw

This is an interview a fellow strength enthusiast and Strongman Competitor Barry Von Perkins did with Brian Shaw of the U.S. who just won METRX 2012 World's Strongest Man.  Barry is the founder of a company that promotes and trains strongman: Edge 2.0 Strongman Training Center

02-02-12 Power Training Day

FINALLY!  I get to use the PERFORM BETTER Resistance bands for dead lift. That is the reason that I purchased them in the first place. Here's how much fun I had:

Self-Myofascial Release and Intense Stretching Sessions

I just recently purchased a foam roller.  I know, I know...a little bit trendy for the Cave of Strength, but as I am discovering this is a good tool for anyone who has muscles(that means you!).  I have been stretching intensely lately and I decided to add this tool to my box of goodies.

01-31-12 Upper Body Power Training + Heavy Events

Back at it again today with the events training and the weight training.  I feel good after yesterday's workout.  I practiced light hammer and braemar stone today, and then did another power workout for upper body with my Monster Mini Bands from PERFORMBETTER.COM, so here we go:

Monday, January 30, 2012

01-30-12 Lower Body Power Training + Heavy Events

I had a session with the "driveway" stone early, then I finished my day with lower body power training with my NEW Monster Mini Bands from PERFORMBETTER.COM!  I was excited about the throwing and anxious about training squats with my new bands.  Here is how the workout ended up:

I am past the 13 week mark now.  No turning back.  I have to see this through till the end.  I will be amping up my throw sessions from here on out.  Here are the videos from today:

01-28-12 Movement Specific Circuit

Since I now am working graveyards for the next three weeks I have a unique opportunity to train on the weekends as well.  Now I am not one to waste days, so in leiu of "taking a day off" I did some throw specific band work.  Here is the circuit:

01-27-12 Upper Body Power Training and a NEW TOY

I have been quiet about this one, as I wasn't sure exactly how long it would take to get here.  A new toy...a new piece of the puzzle.  Who would have thought a a giant rubber band would be so expensive?  My new resistance bands arrived just in time for my's how it went:

01-26-12 Explosive Dynamic Training + Heavy Events

'Twas a tragic day for the Cave of Strength and the Yuba Sutter Heavy Athletics Club Wooly Rhinos.  After hundreds of reps the 2.5" FAT BAR appears to be on it's way to the otherside.  And on it's maiden voyage the Indoor/Street 30# WFD "the Magic Bologna" also....well...just check out the video:

01-25-12 A TRUE day off! But...

I had training for my work all day today that wore me out I only managed to finish building my indoor/street 16# stone and 28# weight for distance.  Pictures below...

01-24-12 Upper Body Strength Training + Heavy Events Training

I completed a stone put session prior to my weight training session for today's workout.  It made a bit of a difference in stamina and strength throughout the entire build up.  Here's how it went:

01-23-12 Lower Body Endurance Training + Heavy Events

The weather has been horrible for heavy events training so I go a little creative and made an indoor/soft for concrete 16lbs. stone.  This workout got interrupted a bit so I split this one up into two sessions.  The first session was during the day and I completed my squats and then did some stone put progressions.  Later that night I finished the rest of the lower body workout.  Here is the result:

Scottish Heavy Athletics NEW website

For those of you that want to know what it is that I am training for, or why the HELL I go to the park and throw rocks around, here is the website for the only organization I competed under:

01-19-11 Explode Strength Training

I have a cold coming on pretty hard today.  It's beating the crap out of me and starting to get worse.  Yet I still hit the Cave of Strength.  It's cold and rainy here in the NorCal valley, so that isn't helping things.  Don't get me wrong I love the rain, just not getting sick.  Pre-workout supplement: Nyquil.  Let's see how that went...

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

01-17-12 Upper Body dynamic Effort Training

It's still extremely cold here and the Cave of Strength is colder than ever.  I worked out during daylight hours, but that didn't seem to help the warmth issue.  Here's how it went:

01-16-12 Lower Body Strength Training and Heavy Events

It's time to switch gears and focus in on my upcoming highland games season.  I am upping my heavy events dosage to three sessions a week.  I am cutting slow movements such as dead lifts.  See how my first day went:

01-13-12 Heavy Events Training - a.k.a "SUCKFEST!"

I wasn't going to post about this totally weak and totally rushed throws session.  I already erased the video because of the disappointment in my own performance.  But in the interest of science I must report my results:

Something to Think About Next Time You Feel Like Quitting

We are all losers compared to this young lady.  I know I posted this on Facebook already but I had to share with everyone else who NEEDS to see this!

01-12-12 Upper Body Strength Training

This is the first time I have trained four days in a row for a long time.  Usually I break the gym sessions into sets of two days with a heavy events throwing day in between.  Needless to say I am wiped out tonight!  Here's how it went:

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

01-11-12 Lower Body Endurance Training

Note: This was a NO BELT workout.  I have never attempted a lower body session without a belt.  That being said, here it goes:

01-10-12 Upper Body Power Training +

This was the workout I needed right now!  I came into the work out jacked and ready to redeem my personal work ethic.  I left the workout with nothing left in the tank.  Here's how:

01-10-12 Dynamic Squat Training a.k.a "I got caught slippin' yo!"

You may be asking yourself if I am just reposting old blogs...well...I'm not.  I am re-doing week 2 in this cycle because I only hit 50% of the workouts I wanted last week.  In my opinion that's not good enough.    And this workout was by far the worst in a very long time.  So here is week 2 redux:

A decent workout I take that I sit here I am realizing that I actually put in a lot of good work.  Not top 5 in regards to workouts that I remember, but a solid taxing effort on behalf of the iron and myself.  Here it goes:

01-02-12 Lower Body Dynamic Training

First workout of the new year couldn't have gone better.  Although my son was in the Cave of Strength with me...talking my ear off...I was still able to get in a good workout.  Here it goes:

Last workout of the year.  I was able to get to the field and do some throws AND get home in time to manage a decent upper body workout.  Here it is:
